What is CLIA?

Contemplative Leaders In Action (CLIA) is a two-year faith-and-values based leadership program rooted in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. While the program nurtures individual growth, it also strives to develop a cohort of leaders who can bring the dynamics of faith and justice to lead their families, co-workers and communities.

Who is CLIA designed for?

CLIA is designed for young adult professionals in their late 20 ~  30. Each year twelve to fifteen emerging leaders representing diverse professions such as healthcare, law, education, business, government and non-profits, will be invited to participate. Participants will share certain key characteristics: a capacity for self-reflection, several years of work experience, a personal commitment to serve the common good, demonstrated leadership potential, and the willingness to pursue spiritual and professional growth.

Who is behind CLIA?

The program sponsor is the Jesuit Collaborative, an organization that promotes Ignatian spirituality throughout the eastern United States. The Collaborative has sponsored CLIA in New York City (since 2008), Boston and Philadelphia (since 2009), Washington, DC (since 2010) and Syracuse, NY (since 2011).

What happens in the program?

In general, the program includes:

v. Monthly meetings that will include various activities such as discussions on suggested readings and presentations from guest speakers on topics ranging from Ignatian spirituality to leadership to Catholic social teaching.

v. In the first year, a weekend fall retreat kicks off the program and in the second year, a weekend spring retreat concludes the program.

v. Participants will be introduced to one or more experienced professionals with whom to discuss the challenges of living a faith-filled life.

v. Participants will be introduced to the gift of spiritual direction, and to spiritual  directors and will be encouraged to participate in either individual or group spiritual direction.

v.  On-going or new participation in service work.

These activities will take place over a two-year time frame, although the program will not meet during summer months.       http://jesuit-collaborative.org/contemplative-leaders

What are the program organizers goals for this initiative and what will participants get out of it?

The goal of Contemplative Leaders in Action is to nurture leaders who are anchored in solid values, open to appropriate adaptation, at the service of others and courageous in making decisions imbued with a sense of justice. It is CLIA hope that:

v. Participants will build a community of peers in various occupations;

v. Learn Jesuit techniques for making good decisions, for praying, and for daily effectiveness;

v. Polish their communication and leadership skills;

v. Reflect on their strengths, weaknesses and role in the world;

v. Discuss the current state of our world and figure out where and how they want to help lead.

What does participation in CLIA cost?

There is a $500 annual fee. If you cannot afford the fee or can only pay a portion of it, please submit a one-paragraph statement with your application explaining why you qualify for financial support and what you are able to pay. We will do our best to assist you in identifying alternative funding opportunities. We do ask that all payments or arrangements for payments be made no later than August 15th.

How do I apply?

The application process is simple and straightforward. Please e-mail the following information to co-project manager Kathryn Hamrlik (khamrlik@jesuitcollaborative.org):

v. Your name and contact information (address, email, phone)

v. A resume or brief summary of your education, work and community service

v. A sentence explaining how you heard about the program and any current or former connection(s) with the Jesuits

v. A one-paragraph statement explaining why you are attracted to this program, what you might hope to gain from it and what you feel you can contribute to it.

We very much welcome your application! But please apply only if you are willing to make a strong, good faith commitment to participate regularly in the program meetings. This program will only work if we develop a close-knit cohort of committed participants.

Once we have your application materials, one of our team will contact you to follow up. If, prior to applying, you have specific questions about the program, please feel free to contact me.

There will be an information/interview session on June 17, 2012. The final deadline for applications is June 30, 2012. Final decisions will be made by July 14, 2012. The program will begin in September 2012.
